Welcome back to another chapter of Random Branches. In the last chapter Mira and Sinbad gave birth to three children: Atton, Carth, and Kreia. Mira also found out about Sinbad’s true career after Sinbad spent several hours in jail doing whatever he could to not be put on trial. And now, on with the story.
Mira and Sinbad felt so stretched out that they decided to hire a babysitter for the day. They would both stay in the house with the babysitter as neither of them really trusted a stranger with their children, but it gave the two of them time catch up on things they had been neglecting. Little Carth had also recently grown into a toddler and he was just as rambunctious as his brother, if not more. He always seemed to be willing to try dangerous things and was easily excited. Now with two toddler to take care of it did further strain the relationship between Mira and Sinbad. Mostly because it left them too tired to really work on their relationship and they were more prone to snapping at each other. Especially Sinbad towards Mira.
Though, in the quite moments when the three youngsters didn’t need anything Sinbad and the babysitter, Caroline, decided to get to know each other a little better. Sinbad figured it wasn’t a bad idea just in case they really did have to leave the house one day. Having a babysitter they knew and trusted would make things a lot more relaxing. Mira agreed, plus she knew that if Caroline knew the parents more, she’d be less likely to slack off in her duties, regardless of whether or not they were present or not.
Soon their oldest was a child and going to school. What Mira and Sinbad had thought were just toddler quirks seemed to remain while new quirks were added. Though instead of blubbering to himself, he had full fledged conversations with people who weren’t there or to himself. And he had a odd habit of not wearing the appropriate outfit places and nothing Mira or Sinbad did could get Atton to change into the appropriate outfit. Though, his teachers did say that Atton was a bit of a natural in music class and had asked who he got it from. Neither Sinbad or Mira knew the answer to that as they didn’t know of any family member with natural talent.
Of course his musical talents and the lingering quirks weren’t the only surprises Mira and Sinbad found. Atton had a tendency to prank his parents. His favorite was the whoopie cushion. Of course that did get him into tons of trouble at school when he would do it to fellow students and of course to the teachers themselves. Sinbad and Mira tried to stop him from doing it, but nothing really seemed to work. They each assumed it was due to his other quirks, but Mira hadn’t really talked to Sinbad in a long time. Not since the day she found out her husband had lied to her.
It broke Sinbad’s heart to know that his relationship with Mira was strained. But he didn’t know how to fix it. He couldn’t go back in time to make himself not lie and knew that he couldn’t buy her forgiveness. So he did what he could. He helped Mira with the day to day activies that he could. He helped her teach Carth the skills that toddlers learn instead of focusing on what he needed to do to get a promotion. It definitely strained his relationship with his boss. But he told his boss to shove it and to leave him be. He wasn’t about to let his dream job interfere with the fact that he had his own little crime family beginning.
Atton had taken to painting as well, but he was no where near a natural at that like he was with music. He was also fond of pretending the desk in the bedroom was a royal court. Mira and Sinbad even obliged his childhood fantasy and bought him the necessary clothes to actually somewhat look the part. They had decided to talk with the school psychiatrist about his quirks and she suggested to just try obliging him for now and to hope that he would just grow out of them.
Of course Mira and Sinbad thought their eldest son was adorable. They saw Mira’s eyes on him and Sinbad’s reddish hair and lighter green eyes. The two of them were quite pleased at the way their genes combined and only hoped that Carth and Kreia would have the same luck.
The two of them did talk to Atton occasionally to see if he even knew what was real and what was imaginary. He knew the desk wasn’t really a royal court but he wouldn’t give off of the imaginary people that he talked to. Or the alternate personality that he swore up and down he could talk to. And had Sinbad and Mira been really talking to each other they would have decided that they should probably take him to a therapist, but Mira still didn’t want much to do with Sinbad and Sinbad didn’t know how to even begin to fix things.
Mira was usually the one who got to fix anything that broke. Though, she did have to read up on how to fix the tv when it broke. It wasn’t like the sink, toilet, or shower when they broke it was generally just clogged. But the television was a whole different story. Messing up here could seriously injure Mira. So Mira took precautions and read up first. Luckily the problem was easily fixable and the tv was back in commission in a matter of several minutes.
Soon Carth was also a school aged kid and along with Atton, loved to play king. And tell ghost stories. Mira and Sinbad were definitely happy that their kids were getting along and that Carth put up with Atton’s little quirks. “It’s just who he is,” was what Carth had told his parents one afternoon after Carth had overheard Mira and Sinbad talking about Atton’s quirks. Of course, Mira and Sinbad knew that Atton got picked on a bit for the quirks and was a bit shocked to find out from Carth’s teacher that Carth was standing up to the fifth graders who had been bullying Atton.
And when Carth wasn’t telling ghost stories, he was going submarine adventures in the shower. Mira and Sinbad just laughed at Carth’s antics and hoped that Atton didn’t rub off too much on his younger brother. They also had a rambunctious toddler daughter to look after and they weren’t quite ready to handle two people with odd quirks. Especially since little Kreia seemed to be just as excitable as her older brother Carth. Though Mira could have sworn she saw Kreia give glares to people who interrupted whatever she was doing at the time.
One day after school during scouts, Atton met a girl who said her name was Shellie Knack. She seemed to put up with Atton’s quirks and was one of those who stood up for Atton when the bullies started to get on Atton’s case for said quirks. Mira and Sinbad even learned that the Knacks lived just lived next door to them and were constantly setting play dates for the two of them.
Sinbad continued to do what he could to help Mira around the house. The pair had finally earned enough money to add on a foyer and a nursery, though they weren’t able to completely separate the foyer from the nursery with the funds available to them. Of course decorating the rooms was painful as the two of them bickered over what colors it should be and what brands to use to save money. The two of them knew the real reason behind the petty bickering, it was the tension in the air over Sinbad’s lie many many years ago. The pair had drifted apart over the years of barely talking to each other and it showed when they had to make joint decisions. Sinbad just hoped his mistake didn’t negatively affect his children.
Sinbad had gotten told by his boss to go drop of a bribe at city hall. All he had been told was to tell the Head of Twinbrook Public Safety Board that he knew what it was for. The guy nodded grimly. Sinbad took the opportunity to ask, “If I’m not being too bold, what was the bribe for?”
“To overlook something your boss is about to do to get one of his lackeys back on track.” the guy said, “I didn’t dare ask what or who. But I do know that he said that I’d know it when it happened.”
Sinbad was gripped with worry. He was one of the lackeys that was slacking off. Could this be something that would harm Mira or the kids? Sinbad decided he was going to try to work out his relationship with Mira pronto so that maybe, just maybe, if he was that lackey he could shape himself up on his own.
Mira answered the phone that night while Sinbad was work. She had just put Kreia down for the night.
“I know where you live, Mira Rand. I know your parents have a nice apartment in Bridgeport. Get your husband focused on his work or something might happen to one of your children or your parents.” the caller said.
Mira asked who the caller was but all the caller did was laugh and hang up. She tried to remain calm, but the fear of something happening to her parents or children was too much. Mira fell to the ground in a faint.
And here we are at the end of the chapter. What will Sinbad do now that his boss has threatened his family? Will Mira forgive Sinbad before it ends their marriage? Will Atton outgrow his quirks? Find out in chapters to come.

Author’s Note: I am tempted to go in and grab a few shots for the next chapter to show Sinbad trying to one up his boss on the blackmail. One, he doesn’t want Mira to be unhappy. Two, if he outstages his boss, his boss’s boss should be impressed and more likely to promote him. I know I said I wasn’t going to stage in the introduction, but that’s mostly major staging that would take several hours RL to set up and do kind of thing.
That and I was getting a feeling that Sinbad and Mira needed an external factor to push them back together so they won’t end up breaking up after the kids are fully grown. Because I don’t know about you, but they’re a cute couple.
And don’t you just love the cliffhanger…
