Welcome back to another chapter of Random Branches! In the last chapter Maximus Zenteri became the room mate for Obi, Leia, and Mission. Both Mission and Maximus were fond of having tons of one night stands. Leia threw up walls every time someone tried to flirt with her. It was also discovered that Leia has panic attacks when in large crowds for too long. And now on with the story.
And the weeks went by. Max tried to get Leia to open up and let someone in. That love wasn’t always destined to hurt. Leia wanted to believe him, but she couldn’t get past what her mother had done to her father. And over the course of their interactions, the two became best friends. They were so close that those who did not know them, assumed they were together.
Obi dated casually. Mission continued to have one night stands.
Max did as well, but as time went on he began bringing fewer of them home and instead went to their place. Obi smiled when he realized that. He guessed that maybe, just maybe, Max had let Leia in too close and Max had begun to have romantic feelings towards Leia.
Soon weeks, turned into months, and months turned into semesters. And semesters into years. The Rands were doing well in college. All of them managing to get 4.0’s. Max was beginning to get noticed by directors and casting directors.
Leia had joined a writer’s club and she was hanging out with them at one of the local coffee shops when a fellow student approached her. “Excuse me ma’am, but I couldn’t help but notice your beauty and was wondering if you wouldn’t mind accompanying me to the theater tonight? I’m Jeffery Dean.”
Leia blushed and said, “I’d love to. I’m Leia Rand.”
“I’ll pick you up at 6 pm then. We’ll have dinner and then go see the play,” Jeffery said.
Leia nodded as Jeffery walked away and the girls in the writer’s club began gossiping away.
“Do I look nice?” Leia asked Max. Both Obi and Mission weren’t home. Mission had left early to the clubs and Obi had a late night class.
Max looked up from the script he had been studying and couldn’t help but stare. Leia was gorgeous. He wished he was this Jeffery Dean guy. “You look better than nice. You’re gorgeous,” Max said standing up and smiling, “Just be yourself and have fun.”
“But myself is super quiet and reserved,” Leia said, “He might get the wrong idea…”
Max put his finger over Leia’s lips. “If he can’t accept the real you and gets the wrong idea, then he doesn’t deserve you.” Max couldn’t help but be surprised at hoping that Jeffery messed up. Was he jealous of Jeffery?
As Leia left for the date, he couldn’t help but wonder if Leia was his true love.
The date went off wonderfully and Jeffery and Leia were soon considered to be an item. But Max couldn’t help but notice how well Jeffery was playing the romance novel guy. It was almost as if he was playing the part to simply win Leia. It seemed too perfect to Max.
He was at a club talking with some ladies, trying to pick one of them up. His heart wasn’t truly in the one night stand anymore. Not since he began to realize that maybe Leia was more than just a best friend.
“Hey there, lonesome,” one of Max’s former one night stands, Rebecca Lynn said.
“Hey, Rebecca. How’s it going?” Max said.
“Alright. Finally back to trying to finding mister right. You?”
“Glad you’re back in the game. I’m finding it hard to try for a one night stand.”
“You? Having trouble with that? You’ve got to be kidding me, Max.”
“I think I’ve fallen for my best friend.”
“And you’re here looking for a one night stand? She’s seeing someone else isn’t she?”
“Yea, Jeffery Dean. Something doesn’t smell right about the relationship though.”
“Like it’s too damn perfect.”
“Yea, how did you know?”
“The guy I was getting revenge woohoo on when I went on my one night stand with you was Jeffery Dean. He’s a world class player. Studies his marks and he’s really good at guessing what his toy wants. Then, when he gets bored, he starts cheating. Very quickly if the woman doesn’t want to woohoo with him.”
“You’re saying shit over the fact that the relationship isn’t bound to last? I thought you were falling for her?”
“I am. Leia’s parents divorced when she was just a child. For a while she would just put up walls and push away anyone who even might have flirted with her. Because she didn’t want to get hurt. I finally got her to not throw up her walls the moment someone flirts with her and she ends up with someone who is going to hurt her. She’s my best friend and I care for her deeply even if my stronger feelings for her don’t last long. I don’t want to see her get hurt.”
“You do realize that since he plays the game so well, she won’t believe you if you tell her and that she’s going to have to learn he’s a player the hard way, right?”
“Be that as it may, it’s my duty to warn her as her best friend.”
Max returned home sans a date. Rebecca’s warning about Jeffery Dean had killed the mood. “Hey, Obi,” he said as he stepped into the kitchen to get a drink.
“Hey, you look like something’s eating you.”
“Curse your perceptive nature. But you’ll want to know about it anyways.”
“Well, you read me the riot act concerning breaking Leia or Mission’s heart. Jeffery Dean is the kind of player that gives those like me a bad name. He strings women along until he gets bored with them and then finds someone else without breaking up first. Quicker if they don’t woohoo with him and we both know Leia won’t woohoo before marriage.”
“And as her best friend you’re wanting to tell her but don’t know how. Just tell her what he’s done in the past. She’ll know deep down that you’re only telling her to help protect her. Even if she doesn’t act like it initially. She is a Rand. She might have a bit of a temper.”
It took Max a few days to work up the courage to tell approach Leia. “Hey, I’ve got something I need to tell you,” Max said after classes one day.
“Ok,” Leia said.
“It’s about Jeffery. One of my past one night stands is one of his ex-girlfriends…”
“And you’re going to trust anything an ex says?” Leia interrupted, “Not to mention, might she hold a grudge against you?”
“She doesn’t. She wanted to have woohoo with someone to piss off Jeffery. At the time she said her ex said she would never find anyone who would woohoo with her. She simply wanted to prove him wrong without having to have any strings attached. Anyway, she said she ended the relationship because she caught him cheating. Now, I’m not saying he’s going to cheat on you, for all I know he’s changed. But I felt you needed to know that he’s cheated in the past.”
Leia glared at Max, “You’re just jealous that I have a relationship and you can’t find someone worth having a relationship with!” She then stormed off.
“I found someone. She’s just taken,” Max whispered.
And that’s it for this chapter! Will Jeffery and Leia stay together or will Jeffery’s old ways happen again? Will Max move on from Leia? Will Mission find mister right? Find out in chapters to come.
